FOOTBALL REPORTS: PHOENIX, TRAPPERS WIN BIG

Here are the football reports from Friday night, Oct. 3

Phoenix 43, Centerville 8

An interception and return for a touchdown by Karter Weber on just the second play from scrimmage set the tone for the night as Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy put up 29 points in the first quarter en route to a 43-8 win over Centerville.

The victory came on a fun night in Marion as the school and community capped its homecoming week.

The Phoenix weren’t as explosive after that first quarter, scoring just one touchdown in both the second and third periods, but maintained total control over the Tornadoes, which earlier in the week received votes in the South Dakota Prep Media Football Poll.

FMFA, No. 1 in Class 9AA, improved to 6-0 while Centerville dropped to 3-3.

Luke Peters ran the ball six times for 143 yards and four touchdowns and, in addition to his pick-six, Weber caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Riley Tschetter.

Weber and Easton Tschetter both had seven solo tackles, Tate Sorensen added five, and Sorensen, Peters, Alaric Knittel and Oliver Waltner each had a quarterback sack.

As a team the Phoenix collected 318 total yards from scrimmage — 178 on the ground — while the Tornadoes threw for 193 yards and ran for 41.

Centerville’s lone touchdown came after a long drive in the second quarter on the final play of the half.

The Phoenix host winless Irene-Wakonda Friday night, Oct. 10 for Freeman’s homecoming game.

Trappers 56, Cowboys 0

In a game that was over by halftime, Scotland/Menno ran for seven touchdowns and scored another on an interception as the Trappers routed Colome 56-0 in Colome. The Friday night, Oct. 3 win was the third win in a row for SM and moved the black and gold to 4-2 on the season.

The Cowboys — held to negative-15 rushing yards — dropped to 0-6; they have been outscored this season 346-0.

Jarret Andretta carried the ball three times for 40 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Izayah Ulmer ran twice for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Also scoring on the ground were Rylan Derby, Mirik Vaith, Hunter Yosten and Hunter Clark.

Yosten also had two interceptions, including a 25-yard pick-six, to go along with three solo tackles and one assist. Brooks Schoenfish and Vaith also had two solo tackles and an assist.

Scotland/Menno, now tied for eighth in Class 9AA seed points, will face perhaps its biggest test of the season during Friday night’s homecoming game in Menno when it hosts Avon. The Pirates go into the Oct. 10 game with a 6-0 record and ranked No. 2 in Class 9B.

The playoffs begin Oct. 23.

FMFA is a lock — likely for home field advantage throughout — while SM appears to be headed for the postseason for the first time in program history.

Bobcats, Flyers, Wolves lose Thursday

The Freeman Academy soccer team lost its final match of the regular season 3-1 to Vermillion while volleyball teams from Freeman and Menno both lost in straight sets Thursday night, Oct. 2. The Flyers (13-7) fell to Ethan (14-8) 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 while the Wolves (1-19) lost to Bon Homme (9-7) 25-10, 25-11, 25-13.

It was Freeman’s third loss in a row.

For the soccer team it’s been a tough stretch of matchers since upsetting No. 1 James Valley Christian 2-1 on Sept. 16. The Bobcats, now 9-3-2, followed that up with a 1-1 tie to Groton Area and then losses to Southwest Minnesota Christian on Sept. 23 and Vermillion on Thursday.

Freeman Academy will go into the Class A playoffs third in the crowded standings, with James Valley No. 1, Vermillion No. 2 and Groton Area No. 4.

The soccer postseason starts Oct. 7.
