CHANGE FOR SCOTLAND/MENNO IN 9AA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

The South Dakota High School Activities Association made a change to the Class 9AA football bracket Monday afternoon, moving Hill City to the No. 5 spot and Hamlin to No. 4. That means Scotland/Menno will be traveling to Hamlin Thursday night — not to the Black Hills.

Here’s a look at what’s ahead on the local sports scene.

Freeman High School volleyball: The Flyers (14-10) have four matches to play this regular season, including two this week — a home battle against Viborg-Hurley (5-18) Monday night, Oct. 20 and another home contest against Hanson (9-14) on Tuesday.

Menno High School volleyball: The Wolves (1-24) also have two matches this week — a contest Monday night, Oct. 20 against Parker/Marion in Marion and a match against Andes Central/Dakota Christian (2-20) at Dakota Christian on Tuesday. Menno finishes its regular season with one match next week.

Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy football: The Phoenix (8-0) take a No. 1 ranking and No. 1 seed into the Class 9AA playoffs that begin this week. FMFA hosts Garretson (3-5) in the opening round of the postseason Thursday night, Oct. 23, with kickoff set to begin at 7 p.m.

Scotland/Menno football: The Trappers (4-4) will make their first playoff appearance when they head to Hamlin (7-1) to face the Chargers in the Class 9AA opening round. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Cross-country: Runners from Freeman and Menno will compete in the South Dakota High School Activities Association State Cross Country Championships at Brodland Creek Golf Course just north of Huron Saturday, Oct. 25. Freeman will run its entire boys team (Lane McCune, Luke Miller, Collin Randall, Josh Olesen and Korbin Jensen) while the Flyer girls will be represented by Olivia Schultz. Menno junior Zoe Schaeffer is the lone qualifier for the Wolves.
