Luke Kelly creates art by pressing a decorative rubber block onto a pad of ink before transferring it to paper Thursday afternoon, July 17. It was part of the Freeman Public Library’s Summer Reading Program’s visit to Heritage Hall Museum & Archives, where it continued with its “Color Our World” theme.

The museum’s collaboration with Freeman Public Library included a scavenger hunt in the Unruh-Tieszen Wing, in which the youngsters had to identify colors of 20 artifacts. Becky Hupp, a summer intern, oversaw that exercise.

Marnette D. Hofer, executive director and archivist, led a storytelling exercise in the Natural World Gallery in which participants used something they saw to document the who, what, when, where and why for a creative writing exercise.

And a letterpress printing activity enabled each participant to print a personalized coloring sheet that they will complete on their own. Kids were also able to create items using rubber stamps provided by the library.

“We love working with organizations like the library to offer experiences that help blend creativity and learning with exploring the history in our museum,” said Tim L. Waltner, the communication and education coordinator at the museum.

“It’s a great collaboration,” said Crystal Nelson, Freeman Public Library’s children’s librarian. “I’m happy they’re willing to work with us.”
