Brenda Raie Kaufman of Sioux Falls, S.D., was born Aug. 16, 1952 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. to Ray and Millie Gunderson. She was called to the arms of her Heavenly Father on Feb. 10, 2019 after a short illness.
She was baptized on Sept. 14, 1952 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Menno, S.D. and was confirmed on May 22, 1966 at St. Peters Lutheran Church of Clayton, S.D. She graduated from Freeman High School, Freeman, S.D., and Dakota Wesleyan of Mitchell, S.D. with an RN degree.
On Aug. 28, 1970 Brenda was united in marriage to Lyle Wuertzer at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Freeman. Their life was blessed with two daughters.
After the death of Lyle, she found her second great love and married Jeffrey Kaufman on Oct. 16, 1999 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Freeman.
Brenda spent much of her time outdoors, designing her backyard and planting flowers. She had a passion for decorating both in her home as well as the various departments in the hospital and was always shopping for another treasure to add to her collections! She also loved traveling and looked forward to their annual trip to Mexico. She found her true calling caring for others as a nurse, first working at the Freeman Community Hospital and then in various departments at Avera McKennan Hospital. Brenda especially enjoyed spending time with her five grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband, Jeff Kaufman; daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Rechnagel; grandson Maxwell; and granddaughters Addison and Sadie of Sioux Falls; daughter, Heather (David) Krueger; granddaughters Adrianna and Jadyn of Arlington, Minn.; mother, Millie Gunderson; sisters: Deb (Jim) Haar of Windsor, Colo., Valerie (Herb) Goldberg of Spokane, Wash., and Gail (Brad) Letcher of Marion, S.D.; brother, Brian Gunderson of Nickerson, Neb.; mother-in-law, Neoma Kaufman of Freeman; sisters-in-law, Rosemary (Glen) Redman of Menno and Shirley Wuertzer of Mitchell; brother-in-law Keith (Kristi) Kaufman of Sioux Falls; and a host of family and friends.
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Wuertzer; father, Ray Gunderson; fathers-in-law, Elmer Wuertzer and Menno Kaufman; mother-in-law, Ann Wuertzer; and sister-in-law Joanne Wuertzer.
Memorials made be directed to Avera Behavioral Health and Zion Lutheran Church Parish Nurse fund.
A memorial service was held at Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, with a private burial at Freeman City Cemetery.
