Ivan John Ven Osdel died peacefully in his bed with his family nearby on March 23, 2018 in Rapid City, S.D., at the age of 66.
Ivan raised four children — Alicia (Chad) Golladay, Ivan (Lacey) Ven Osdel, Stacy Ven Osdel and Jessie Ven Osdel — and was later reunited with daughter Crystal (Matt) Kludt. He is also survived by four grandchildren and siblings: Danny (Lisa) Ven Osdel, Jan (Steve) Johnson, Wade Ven Osdel and Clay (Bridget) Ven Osdel. He is preceded in death by his father Gerald “Dean” Ven Osdel, mother Mildred Ven Osdel and brother Lewis (Donna) Ven Osdel.
Ivan was born in 1952 in Parkston, S.D., and lived on the family farm until joining the Navy after high school, spending most of his time on aerial reconnaissance missions. After his service he attended the University of South Dakota at Springfield, S.D. He later started his own business, Ven Osdel Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning. He owned and operated his business in Springfield and the surrounding area for over 25 years. During that time Ivan married and grew his family.
Ivan was creative, composing letters and voice recordings for his siblings and children and writing quirky letters, under a pen name, to the local paper. His writing often included musings or parables meant to amuse or teach. Ivan also enjoyed painting and creating his own tools or equipment for business or pleasure. He loved to help those in need, offering many a place to stay.
