Joseph Robert “Joe” Massey, 58 of Yankton, S.D., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. A memorial service was held Friday, June 28 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. Dani Jo Bierwagen officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date. Pallbearers are Justin Massey, Bobby Punt, Kyle Massey, William Massey, Patrick Massey, Tyler Massey, Wayne Massey, Michael Massey and Jeffery Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers are Sonya Massey, Emily Massey, Katie Punt, Lisa Punt and Elizabeth Massey, Monica Massey, Brittney Massey, Carol Massey, Ashton Massey, Amber Rinehart and Amanda Johnson.
Joseph Robert Massey (Joe) was born on Aug. 20, 1960 in Yankton to Robert and Janice [Haberer] Massey. Joe went to country school until fourth grade and then went to Menno Public School. He graduated in 1979. He worked for various farmers, Stuart Huber, Heinie Farms, Guthmiller Trucking, Valley Ag Service and Svartoien Harvest Crew where he traveled to Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and all the way back to North Dakota just to name a few. He enjoyed going fishing, working with smaller vintage farm machinery and gardening. He liked to use the produce he raised to cook with. Joe collected John Deere tractors, enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He also enjoyed going to the colonies to visit, eat and get different foods they made. Joseph loved to pick on his nieces and nephews and loved doing any kind of farm work.
Joseph is survived by his mom and dad, Robert and Janice Massey; brothers: Jim (Deb), Bill, Steve, Larry, Dan (Debra), Frank (Stacy) and Raymond (Audrey); sisters: Valerie (Les) and Helen (Tom); 20 nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Rose Massey; Lawrence and Marcella Haberer; and one niece, Alexis Marie Luttmann.
