LaVella V. Kaufman was born to Herbert and Annie (Engel) Mehlhaff on April 21, 1934.
During her youth she enjoyed playing softball on a team that included her sisters. They enjoyed winning many games. “Vel,” as she was known to many people, moved to Freeman and was united in marriage to Johnny Kaufman on January 3, 1970. She worked as a sales clerk for several businesses through her years. Vel was a hard worker and took pride in her garden, canning, and taking care of her acreage.
Vel was recently diagnosed with cancer and placed in hospice care. She passed away Jan. 7, 2018.
She is survived by her sisters, Elvira, Bertha, and Neoma, as well as many nieces and nephews, and great nieces.
Preceding her in death are her husband Johnny, her brothers Howard, Alvin, and Richard, her brother-in-law Kenneth Kaufman, and her sisters-in-law Gladys Waltner and Anna Kaufman.
A memorial service was held at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church Jan. 10, with Pastor Corey Miller officiating. Pallbearers were Jim Gillette, Curtis Fast, Mike Mehlhaff, Scott Preheim, Lee Kaufman and Allen Mehlhaff. Interment was at the Salem-Zion Church Cemetery.
