Lester David Schroeder was welcomed into the family of Emma and David Schroeder in Kingman, Kan., on July 17, 1923. Their family consisted of Raymond, Hulda, Ralph, Viola, Esther and Phoebe (all deceased).

Lester had many wonderful stories of growing up on a farm with his large family. He attended school in the Kingman, Kan. area and graduated from Belmont High School. Lester met Emma Becker while on a corn picking crew traveling through South Dakota. They exchanged marriage vows on May 6, 1948 in the Bethesda Mennonite Church near Marion, S.D.

Emma and Lester began their life together in Kansas returning to South Dakota after about a year-and-a-half. Bringing daughter (Diane) with them, they settled in Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1956. The family was complete with the arrival of three more daughters: Doreen, Debra, and Donita. Lester’s love of travel led him to be a truck driver, logging millions of miles on the road. Despite the fact that he drove for a living, his favorite vacation was a road trip and he loved to visit parks, especially looking for wild animals.

Lester is survived by his daughters: Diane (Epp), Doreen, Debra and Donita; son-in-law Ardell Epp; grandchildren: Cortney Epp-Nelson and husband Joey, and Barrett Epp and wife Alisha; great-grandsons: Cole, Brody and Ethan; great-granddaughters MacKenzie and Lauren; and his much-loved pets: Smoky, Ember and Shiloh.

Lester passed away on Aug. 15, 2018. A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 20 at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman. with Pastor Shane VanMeveren officiating. Interment was at the Tieszen Cemetery in Marion.
