Freeman Mayor Sam Sorensen, who also helped coordinate Feeding South Dakota's stop in Freeman, loads cans of pop and flavored water during the food giveaway at the old fire station in City Hall late Thursday afternoon, June 14. Feeding South Dakota, a Sioux Falls-based organization, brought 9,000 lbs. of food to town for Thursday's giveaway; Soresnen says 92 families — 325 individuals — were served, and of those 92 families, 79 were from Hutchinson County.

Whole chickens, hamburger patties, onions, potatoes, organic kidney beans and diced tomatoes, breads, rolls, cake mixes and frosting were among the foods distributed, and Sorensen said most of it was gone by the end of the evening. A strong volunteer force, including junior high-aged youth from the community, helped distribute the food and transport it to people's vehicles.

This was third year in a row Feeding South Dakota has made a stop in Freeman.
