Three members of the Freeman Public Library staff received hands-on training Wednesday afternoon, May 16, in preparation for monthly driver license renewals that will be offered at the Freeman Public Library starting Tuesday, June 5. Pictured at the computer is Blair Aasland, a field computer service engineer providing services for the licensing program. Looking on is library staff member Anne Stahl, left; Library Director LeAnn Kaufman, center; and library staff member Leann Schulz-Thomas. Kaufman said the two-hours in training “explained a lot of the things we’ll be doing. There’s a lot involved with this.”
People renewing their licenses will fill out a form at the library and library staff will conduct the eye exam, take the photo and get a signature from each applicant and the Freeman staff will send everything to Pierre through a computer that the state has provides the local library as part of this program. The state will create the new license and mail it to the driver. Monthly driver license exams in Freeman ended in 2009 as part of a statewide restructuring and consolidation, balancing costs and benefits. But interest from the state in restoring the renewal process emerged late last year. That led to discussions with Kaufman who sees the program as another way for the library to offer services to the larger Freeman community.
