Freeman High School freshman Collin Helma hands off to senior Charles Harberts in the 800-meter relay at the Menno Relays Thursday, April 12. It was finally a nice day for a track meet, which resulted in a full slate of teams for both the high school and junior high divisions. An estimated 1,500 student-athletes from a host of schools — from Yankton to Webster to Sioux Falls Christian — competed under comfortable weather conditions. The best finish locally came from Helma, Harberts and teammates Dalton Bodewitz and Braxton Schmidt, who finished second in the 800 relay and won the 400 relay. The Freeman boys tied for sixth out of 16 high school teams and the girls were seventh out of 17 high school teams. Freeman Academy/Marion's best finish came from Brennan Haggerty, who finished second in the 800, and from the 1,600 relay team of Preston Engbrecht, Jayden Lemons, Haggerty and Thaniel Schroeder, which finished in the runner-up slot.
