Roland Schnabel

Roland Schnabel, 83, of Emery, S.D., died Monday, July 22, 2019 at his home under hospice care.

A funeral service was held Saturday, July 27 at Grace Reformed Church in Mitchell. Burial was in the Zion Reformed Cemetery, rural Menno, S.D.

Roland Alvin Schnabel was born on Jan. 9, 1936 to Edna and Reinhold Schnabel in Emery. On June 10, 1957, he married his sweetheart, Gloria Holzwarth at the Johannesthal Reformed Church in rural Freeman, S.D. They shared their love of farming throughout their 62 years of marriage.

He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who left a profound legacy of his character and faith to his family, friends and business associates.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of 62 years; children Kevin (Christi) Schnabel of Emery, Dawn (Shawn) Hodges of Rapid City, S.D., and Tim (Kim) of Rapid City; daughter-in-law Diane (Duane) Schnabel Walters of Freeman; 13 grandchildren: Tracey (Brian) Mehlhaff of Scotland, S.D., Travis Schnabel and fiancé Nicole of Freeman, Jennifer (Tom) Savage of Lennox, S.D., Jeff (Samantha) Schnabel of Volin, S.D., Natalie (Luke) Mushitz of Iowa City, Iowa, Elizabeth (Drew) Waltner of Sioux Falls, S.D., Tara (Josiah) Smith of Greenville, S.C., Ben Hodges of Rapid City, Kaity (Adam) Couture of Rapid City, Savannah Brown of Rapid City, Halsey Schnabel of Minneapolis, Minn., and Parker and Preston Schnabel of Rapid City.

He is also survived by 13 dearly loved great-grandchildren: Asher, Aiden, Aurora, Jacob, Noah, Aubrie, Zoe, Allison, Kathryn, Huxley, Paityn, Raien and Grayson, as well as his sister, Laverna (Leroy) Orth of Ames, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Corey; his parents, Reinhold and Edna Schnabel; brother LeRoy Schnabel, and grandson Richard Schnabel, brother-in-law John Holzwarth, brother-in-law Harris Hofer, sister-in-law Norma Chamberlain and brother-in-law Tom Chamberlain.
