STATE TRACK: MASSEY, PETERS BEST IN 300 HURDLES PRELIMS
Like they did Thursday in the 100 hurdles, Menno junior Ashton Massey and Freeman Public eighth grader Rylee Peters both qualified for Saturday's final in the 300 hurdles with strong runs in the preliminary race Friday afternoon. Massey clocked the top time in the field at 46.8 while Peters was second at 47.58. Massey also takes the best clocking into the 100 hurdles final while Peters goes in third in the field.

Freeman High School senior Kate Miller runs to the finish line to greet her teammates immediately following the 4x100 preliminary during the opening day of the three-day state track meet Thursday. Miller and the three other runners — Makenzie Scharberg, Rylee Peters and Zenovia Butler — won their heat with another personal best (15.66) and will compete in the 400-meter final Saturday with the third-best time in the field. The Flyers will also be looking to qualify the 4x200 for Saturday's final, with that prelim set for 10:30 a.m. today.

STATE TRACK: MENNO BOYS PUT UP 31 POINTS ON FIRST DAY
Hayden McNinch, a senior from Menno, picked up another point for the Wolves by finishing eighth in the shot put early Friday afternoon, giving the MHS boys 32 points midway through the state meet. McNinch bettered his incoming best by almost 2 feet and recorded a heave of 45-8 1/2. His incoming best was 43-11 1/2.

This was the scene at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls Thursday morning in the opening moments of the 117th South Dakota High School Activities Association State Track Meet, which will continue of the course of the next three days and feature athletes from 2,771 athletes from Class B, A and AA schools. Freeman Academy/Marion, Freeman Public and Menno are well-represented and featured in nearly every Class B event, with the Menno boys holding the best chance at a strong team finish. Watch for updates later tonight and throughout the course of the following days.

Carrol Langeland: 1948-2023
Carrol Langeland, 75, of Menno, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on May 23 at his residence. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Christian Reformed Church of Menno. Visitation will be Thursday, June 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walter's Funeral Home in Freeman, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

F/M/FA finishes the SDHSAA's inaugural season of sanctioned softball with a 5-11 record.
