This is a photo of Freeman looking to the northwest taken Friday morning, Feb. 10. The intersection pictured at the bottom is the corner of Highway 81 and the South County Road. The greater Freeman community was settled by pioneers who immigrated here from the Russia/Ukraine area beginning in 1874 and the town was named in 1879 with the expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Company. The city was incorporated in 1883.

DeWayne Graber: 1938-2023
DeWayne Graber, 84, of Freeman, S.D., passed away on February 4 at the Oakview Terrace in Freeman. A funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Bethany Mennonite Church in Freeman. DeWayne Larry Graber was born on March 23, 1938, to Albert and Mabel (Gering) Graber. DeWayne and his siblings, Lawrence, Terry, and Sharon, all grew up in Freeman on the family farm.

Glenn Schoppert: 1933-2023
Glenn Edward Schoppert age 90 formerly of Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids, S.D. Glenn was born on Jan. 13, 1933, on his family’s farm near Freeman, S.D., to Edward and Louisa (Mutschelknaus) Schoppert. He was baptized on July 23, 1933, at his family church and confirmed on June 6, 1948, at the First Congregational Church in Scotland, S.D. He attended country school and graduated from Freeman High School in 1951.
