Facing two must-wins game in 90-plus degree heat, Scotland/Menno staved off elimination twice and punched their ticket to the 16U State VFW Tournament with wins over Salem and Freeman/Marion Wednesday evening in Freeman. The Trappers first defeated the Cubs 8-5 and then took out the Sticks 7-2 to earn one of two Region 4 spots in the state tournament next week in Parkston. 

Tyndall scored three runs on three walks in the first inning and that was enough to get the job done against the Freeman/Marion Sticks in the second round of the Region 4 VFW 16U Tournament in Freeman Wednesday afternoon. The Sticks got one back in both the fourth and the seventh innings and had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but came up short, falling 3-2.

JEREMY WALTNER - PUBLISHER When considering other popular festivals across the state, the South Dakota Chislic Festival is still relatively young. It debuted just five years ago, and Saturday’s big to-do will be just the third time it will be held on the sprawling grounds of the Freeman Prairie Arboretum. Yet it feels familiar.

The Swiss Choral Society has announced its concert for the fall of 2023 with a performance of Brahms' “A German Requiem” or “Ein Deutsches Requiem.” The work will be performed in English with piano accompaniment and soloists. Peter Tuff, who had the leading male role in the Schmeckfest production of “State Fair,” will be featured as the baritone soloist.

Scotland/Menno will play in an elimination game Wednesday at 5 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s second game between Parker and Salem.
