PUBLISHER’S COLUMN: WE THE PEOPLE
Jeremy Waltner: Husband to Stacey and Dad to Ella & Oliver, who is still hopeful the Phoenix can make a deep postseason run.
By News Staff
September 14, 2023
Like many who take even a casual interest in sports, I was curious to see how Aaron Rodgers would fare in his debut as quarterback with the New York Jets as they faced the Buffalo Bills in Monday Night Football action early this week. And, like many who either tuned in to the primetime telecast or c...

EDITORIAL: NEWS OUT OF KANSAS TROUBLESOME AT BEST
The news that broke out of Marion, Kansas over the weekend following the search and seizure of the Marion County Record’s newsroom and publisher’s home is troubling at best and deeply dangerous at worst. Not only was it reckless and intrusive, but it appears to be in violation of federal law that protects free speech and freedom of the press. For those who don’t know, here’s what happened.

PUBLISHER’S COLUMN: THREE DAYS IN THE CITY
“I’m holding history.” That was Oliver’s comment to me as he clutched his Canon R10 camera and we stepped foot onto the Howard Wood Field track complex in Sioux Falls Thursday morning for the first day of the 2023 SDHSAA State Track & Field Championships. I took a second to let his words — “I’m holding history” — sink in before replying, “Yes you are, Ollie. Yes you are.”

A Courier editorial published last week suggested that the firing of Fox News host Tucker Carlson and CNN’s Don Lemon — two commentators who brought their own political agendas to the “news desk” at their respective networks — might be a step in the right direction when it comes to civil discourse.

EDITORIAL: ELECTIONS ARE SPECIAL; VOTE
The four candidates running for two spots on the Menno School Board of Education have given voters living in the Menno School District a gift — they have given them a choice. In a textbook display of the democratic process, incumbent Jon Schempp is being challenged by Jackie Vaith, Joel Rempfer and Molly Huber in next week’s election, which will take place on Tuesday, April 11. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the fire hall on Menno’s Fifth Street.
