The Thursday morning sun lights up an oak tree, revealing the colors of the season that are quickly beginning to emerge. So is the cooler weather; temperatures are expected to drop to around the freezing mark (and below) tonight and tomorrow night.

The Freeman High School volleyball team comes together with senior Kate Miller to celebrate her 1,000th kill during Tuesday night's match against Bon Homme. The milestone came two weeks after Miller and teammate Erin Uecker were both recognized for reaching 1,000 career digs.

An overnight rain and generally dreary conditions made Tuesday morning feel like the fall season it is. Freeman received about .40 of moisture, leaving water like this outside of First Interstate Bank standing in the roadway.

Concrete work continues on Freeman's Main Street north of Railway Monday morning, Oct. 3. Work on the northern stretch of roadway began last week and has made its way past AMPI and Freeman Lumber; meanwhile, one block on Third and Fourth streets east of Main is ready for concrete while workers will also be turning their attention to the western blocks, where the old street still needs to be torn out.

The Silver Lake MB Church was located across from Silver Lake and along Highway 81 north of Freeman until the early 2000s, when the congregation closed and the building was relocated to Sioux Falls.

This house, which is still located on the North County Road on the northwest corner of Freeman, was home to J.J. Mendel, who published the Freeman Courier from 1902 until 1960.

For students attending Freeman Public in the first quarter century of the 1900s, this was their school building. It was located on what is now Lions Park and served the district until it was destroyed by a fire in 1923. A new building was constructed in 1925 on what was then the eastern portion of the community — Wipf Street — and served all students until the junior-senior high school opened 50 years later. The Wipf Street property continued to serve Freeman Elementary students until the current building opened in 2009, when it was destroyed.

Senior Chris Cardona moves with the ball in soccer action Tuesday evening. Freeman Academy hosted Vermillion in the evening matchup with the Bobcats falling 6-0. Still, it appears as though the local soccer team will make the postseason as the No. 6 seed, which means they would travel to St. Thomas More next Tuesday, Oct. 4 for the first round of the playoffs. Daniel Sayler and Madelyn Kludt (seated) were crowned king and queen as Menno kicked off its homecoming week with coronation Monday night, Sept. 6 in the city/school auditorium. Activities are planned throughout the week, with a 10:45 a.m. parade on Friday and Friday night football game against Flandreau highlighting the week of "Wolves/Trapper Pride."
