Mildred Janice (Koerner) Siekmann was born Jan. 1, 1934 in rural Bridgewater, S.D. to Arthur and Annetta (Handel) Koerner. She died May 17, 2018 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Mildred was baptized into the Christian faith on Feb. 11, 1934 at KleinKassel Reformed Church by Rev. Zogg. She was confirmed on May 29, 1949 by Rev. Korn at Zion Reformed Church. Millie attended country school through eighth grade and then graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1951.
After graduating from Nettleton College, she did secretarial work in Sioux Falls before moving to Denver, Colo. While in Denver, she met Otto Siekmann, and was united in marriage to him on Feb. 27, 1959. They lived in France until Otto was discharged from the Army in 1962. They lived near Beresford, S.D., then Freeman, S.D. before moving to the Koerner family farm south of Bridgewater. Millie and Otto farmed there until Otto’s death in 1998. Millie also did secretarial work at the Presuhn Insurance Agency in Bridgewater for many years during income tax filing season.
Millie moved to Freeman in September 1998. She worked at the Freeman Country Inn and enjoyed traveling to many places, including Hawaii, Canada, California, Missouri and Ireland.
Grateful for having shared her life are two sons: Jeffrey (Jane) Siekmann of Brookings, S.D., and Kerry (Jody) Siekmann of St. Louis Park, Minn.; five grandchildren: Matthew, AJ and Rachel Siekmann, Joey (Kari) LeMay and Stephanie (Robert) Galvin; two great-grandchildren: Thomas and Josie Galvin; and her sister, Belva Herren of Billings, Mont. She also leaves one aunt, Ada Koerner, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
