Lila Mae Tieszen Hofer was born on September 11, 1935 to Willie R. and Bertha Tieszen of Marion, S.D. She was the third of five children. Lila spent her childhood years growing up on the family farm. Her favorite chores were gathering eggs from the chicken coops and helping her older brother, Leslie, milk the cows. Besides the farm, the Silver Lake Mennonite Brethren Church was a big part of Lila’s life as well as her family.

After graduating from Marion High school in 1953, Lila attended Freeman Junior College. There she joined the choir and the cheerleading team. Lila married Gordon Hofer on April 14, 1955. Gordon joined the navy as a submarine electrician and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. They packed their bags and found their forever home in the Mission Hills area of San Diego. In 1956 son, Ken was born and in 1962, daughter, Susan was born.

Over the years Lila was very involved in her church. She sang in the San Diego chapter of the Sweet Adelines for many years and was an accomplished pianist. Lila also enjoyed having friends and family over in their Mission Hills home. Lila and Gordon were blessed with three grandchildren, Thor, Erica and Sarah. Lila was very fond of visiting new places with her family. In 2002, Gordon passed away.

Lila passed away on April 30, 2018 from complications of a severe stroke. Her funeral was on May 12 in San Diego. Preceding her in heaven are her parents, Willie R. and Bertha Tieszen, older brother, Reginald and younger sister, Norma Gaskins. She is survived by son Ken and wife Lee; daughter Susan and husband Eric Johnson; grandchildren Thor, Erica and Sarah; brothers Leslie and wife Mary and Burdette and wife Darla.

Anyone who knew Lila knew how much she cherished her family. A day won’t go by where we won’t miss her, but we all know we will see her again.
