Jane Ries

Jane Grace Ries died May 14, 2018 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, S.D. with her family at her side. She reached the age of 87 years, nine months, and 19 days. She was born July 25, 1930 in Childstown Township to Leon and Lena Kaufman. She joined a family which included a sister, Doris, and two brothers, Delbert and Clyde. She attended country school at Hillside District # 92, graduated from Freeman Academy, and received her teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College.

Upon her confession of faith, Jane was baptized by Rev. Willard Claassen at Salem Mennonite Church of rural Freeman on Oct. 28, 1945, where she remained a faithful, active, life-long member. It was after a year of teaching that she attracted the attention of one particular, persistent neighbor boy, and on Aug. 17, 1950, she married the man of her dreams, Marvin Ries, at the Salem Mennonite Church, with Rev. Willard Claassen officiating. They were blessed with 65 years and 11 months together.

Mother had numerous passions, which included her devotion to her church. She was actively involved in Sunday school teaching, various committees, and her Women in Missions group. Support for her school, Freeman Academy, was also very important to her as she served for decades in the Women’s Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener, with an almost magical touch when it came to fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and her love of music was unending. But her greatest passion was for her family, and especially her nine grandchildren. Sundays and holidays at Grandma’s was an event, and her days of hosting, entertaining, and of course, mealtimes, will be missed the most.

Her spirit will live on in her survivors: sons Murray (Emily), Karl, and daughters Lynelle (Steve) Andal and Susan (Jon) Bot. Surviving grandchildren include Micah, Amanda and Alexandra Ries, Michelle Parsons Bernaix, Shannon, and Kyle Parsons, Trevor and Matthew Andal, and Kelli (Bot) Spader; six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ardelle (Allen) Schrag; two brothers-in law, Alan Ries and Lemoyne (JoAnn) Ries; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents; two infant grandsons, Adam and Aaron Ries; brothers and sisters-in-law Bervin and Doris Sherard, Delbert and Dolores Kaufman, Clyde and Fern Kaufman, Sara Ries; and nieces Judith Kaufman, Karen Cressman and Lori Candee.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 23 at the Salem Mennonite Church, with Rev. Robert Engbrecht officiating. Music was provided by organist Harriet Kaufman and a quartet of Norm Kaufman, Steve Graber, Kerwin Graber and Gregg Waltner. Interment was in the Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Card of thanks

The family of Jane Ries would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the cards, flowers, phone calls, and many acts of sympathy and kindness following the recent passing of our Mother. A special thanks to Dr. Kirton and the amazing staff at Oakview Terrace for all their efforts over these last five years. Again, thank you.
