A survival guide to the 2018 S.D. Chislic Festival

This isn't everything you may need to know, but it's a good start

Do I have to pay to get in?

No, but you’ll want to bring some cash. Vendors will be charging for their products and those who want their children to be able to participate in the kid-friendly activities will need to buy a wristband (also good for swimming). While some vendors may be able to accept credit cards, guests shouldn’t count on it. All festival merchandise will be for sale under the big tent that will be on softball park grounds; credit cards will be accepted there. And there will be an ATM on festival grounds if you run out of cash.

Where should I park?

Parking will be in several areas, with festival staff members directing traffic. Most traffic will be encouraged to enter from North County Road turning by the Northwestern building. The south side of the baseball/softball park complex will be used first, followed by the undeveloped land east of the festival grounds (near those big Quonsets). If that lot fills up, traffic will be directed to the Freeman High School parking lot on the far south end of Wipf Street. Shuttle service will be making a nonstop loop across all locations. Street parking will be available, too, but just beware that Wipf Street along the western edge of the baseball/softball park will be closed to all traffic. Handicapped and VIP/staff parking will be on softball grounds near the main entrance.

And where is that?

By the large information tent that will be set up near where the baseball field ends and where the softball field starts. All guests will enter from the south.

More at the festival's official website.

Do I have to pay for parking?

No, parking is also free, as is the shuttle service that will take you from the primary parking area to the festival itself.

Can I ride my bicycle?

Of course; parking for that is in the grassy area along Wipf Street. But you still need to enter through the main festival entrance.

What should I do once I'm there?

Depends on who you are. If you’re part of a family with children you’ll probably want to spend some time at the Swimming Pool Park where there will be a variety of family-friendly activities, but no food and drink stands aside from pop and water. For the majority of foods you’ll have to stay at the softball field. While chislic will be the main event, there will also be burgers, ice cream, pizza and more, as well as merchandise vendors, all set up west of the softball field. You can also get S.D. Chislic Festival goods in the tent when you enter. Food, non-alcoholic beverages, and merchandise will be available until the event ends, or while supplies last. Alcohol service will end at 9 p.m.

Can I bring a cooler?

No. Coolers are strictly prohibited.

Where can I buy beer?

The beer stand will be set up in the northwest area of the softball park complex. Those over 21 years old will need to obtain a wristband at one of several stations to purchase alcohol, which cannot be taken outside of the softball park grounds.

Read all about how this came to be and the planning that went into it.

Will there be first aid?

Yes. Right by the beer stand.

Will seating be available?

There will be a substantial amount of seating, including over 250 seats under a shaded tent. Seating will also include picnic tables, other tables and chairs and tables you can stand by, but attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or folding chair.

How do I vote in the competition?

Those wishing to vote in the people’s choice category will pay $1 for a ballot and then $1 for a stick of chislic from each of the 10 competitors.

Can I eat as much chislic as I want?

In some cases. But not all chislic vendors are there to sell in bulk; some are there just for the competition and will only have chislic available to those voting in the people’s choice category.

Anything else?

No pets, no firearms. Have fun!
