County, Olivet officials to meet about courthouse

Special meeting Nov. 27 will focus on new location

The Hutchinson County Courthouse, Olivet

A special joint meeting of the Hutchinson County Commission and the Olivet Town Board will be held in Olivet Monday, Nov. 27 to discuss the possibility of vacating its current property and building a new courthouse elsewhere within the city limits of Olivet.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. inside the commission chambers at the courthouse.

Hutchinson County officials have been discussing what to do about the old and deteriorating courthouse for much of this year. Constructed in 1882, Hutchinson County’s is the oldest working courthouse in the state of South Dakota.

The commission had initially considered renovating the wings of the current courthouse and building a new center section — including the courtroom — on the existing footprint. Officials then shifted gears and considered a plan that would see the courthouse removed entirely and a new one built to the north.

The meeting later this month will focus on a third option of building new elsewhere in Olivet; officials have not said where they are considering, but a letter to the editor printed on page 5A of this week’s Courier offers some insight.
