Janice Engbrecht: 1955-2001

Janice (Jan) Elizabeth (Schock) Engbrecht was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend was called home to be with the Lord on Jan. 16, 2021 at the Sanford Cottage Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D. after a short battle with breast cancer at the age of 65.

Larry Tolzin: 1934-2021


We have all read books or seen movies about men who have overcome great odds and lived to be an inspiration to others in their lives. Sometimes we are lucky enough to be the son, daughter, neighbor or friend to such a man.

Larry Dean Tolzin, age 86, passed away on Jan. 8, 2021 in Phoenix, Ariz. Larry was born to Pearl and Lloyd Tolzin on Jan. 19, 1934 in Arlington, S.D. Cerebral palsy would challenge Larry but would never slow him down or define him throughout his life.

Harvey Wall: 1933-2021

Harvey Wall

Harvey Daniel Wall, 87, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, S.D. following a lengthy illness. He was born in Freeman on June 20, 1933 to Albert and Dorothea (Stern) Wall. He grew up in Freeman and served two years in the Army before returning to the family farm and to continue his higher education.

Harley Thomas: 1928-2021

Harley Thomas, 92, died peacefully at home on Jan. 11, 2021 after a few weeks in Home Hospice (Care) due to heart failure. A memorial service to celebrate his life is pending and will be announced sometime in spring. 

Emma E. Hofer: 1926-2021

Emma Esther Hofer was born Sept. 22, 1926 at the home of her parents Joe K. Hofer Sr. and Elizabeth Hofer. She was born at the Michael D. Hofer farm south of Bridgewater, S.D. and attended the Neu Hutterthal Church until the age of 14. In 1940 the family moved to the Dolton, S.D. area where she attended Dolton school and graduated from Dolton High School in 1944.

Melton Langle: 1927-2021

Melton Edward Langle was born April 9, 1927 to Anton and Martha (Huber) Langle. He was baptized May 15, 1927 and confirmed June 29, 1941 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Clayton, S.D. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial and Clayton District 65 Public Schools through eighth grade. He then worked with his father on the family farm.

John Eli Hofer: 1923-2021

John Eli Hofer, son of Rev. Jacob B. Hofer and Barbara E. Hofer (Wipf), was born near Dolton, S.D. on Oct. 29, 1923. He received his elementary education in Freeman Public School and graduated from Dolton in 1943.

As a young boy he grew up in a Christian home, where prayers and his studying of God’s word was a part of daily life.

Death Notice: Anita Neufeld

Anita Neufeld, 70, of Freeman, S.D., passed away Sunday, Jan. 3 at Oakview Terrace. A visitation with family present will be held Saturday, Jan. 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.

Terry Auch: 1948-2020

Terry Auch, age 72 of Menno, S.D., passed away at home on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020. Terry was diagnosed with brain cancer on Aug. 17. After three weeks of cancer treatments, he tested positive for COVID-19. He then spent three weeks at Avera McKennan Hospital and six weeks at Freeman Regional Health Services before returning home on hospice care.
