Seventh-seed Menno advanced to the second round of the Region 5B Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over No. 10 Viborg-Hurley while No. 11 Freeman Academy/Marion lost to No. 6 Irene Wakonda 3-0 in the first round of postseason play Monday night, Nov. 2.
In a match played in Menno, the Wolves cruised to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-11 win over the Cougars behind seven kills and 12 digs from senior leader Jesse Munkvold, who also had three aces. Kylie Harriman and Grace Nusz had nine and eight set assists, respectively, and Adrian Nusz led the team from the service line with five aces. Bridget Vaith added five kills and two blocks for the Wolves, who will a take a 10-12 record into their second-round match against No. 2 Gayville-Volin in Gayville. The Raiders are 15-3. Viborg-Hurley ends its season 2-18.
Freeman Academy/Marion, meanwhile, traveled to Wakonda for Monday's match and lost to the Eagles 25-18, 25-7, 25-13. The Bearcats were led by Leah Goodwin's five blocks, four digs and two kills. Maria Cortes added a pair of aces and a pair of kills while Alexa Gortmaker had three digs and a block. The Bearcats finish their season 0-14 while Irene-Wakonda takes a 10-14 record into its second-round match against No. 3 Freeman Public in Freeman Tuesday night.
