Dr. Ken Kirton, the former chief of staff at Freeman Regional Health Services, offers a few remarks after being presented with a Modern Woodmen Hometown Hero award Monday afternoon, Sept. 21. After living in Freeman since 1992, Kirton has moved to Sioux Falls where he is the medical director for the hospice program at Avera, although he is still practicing at Freeman Regional Health Services one week a month. Folks of all ages found fun on Menno's Fifth Street as the fifth annual Menno Volunteer Fire Department Car Show played out Saturday afternoon and evening, Sept. 19. Vehicles of all shapes, sizes, colors and ages lined both sides of the downtown area and firefighters served ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and other foods out of the fire hall. Watch for more in the Oct. 1 issue of The Courier.

The fundraiser returns today, Saturday, Sept. 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and will include food (ribs and pulled pork) prepared by the fire department and live music in the evening.

The win moved No. 2 Canistota/Freeman to 4-1 while the Eagles dropped to 0-5.

Corene Mehlhaf: 1971-2020
Corene Kay Mehlhaf (Oelsligle) “Corky,” age 48 of Menno, S.D., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2020 at Zion Reformed Church in Menno with the Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. Burial will follow in the Menno Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the church. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to service time on Monday.
