Kade and Kyle Schievelbein, brothers with Construction Signs, Inc., out of Sioux Falls, paint markings at Main and Fourth streets in downtown Freeman Tuesday morning. Many of the new lines being painted will replace the original markings that have faded since the trim work was done on the city's new roadway.

The golf team from Freeman Public, which won the school's second-ever boys region championship last month, stands for a photo prior to leaving for Watertown and the state golf meet to be played over two days Monday and Tuesday. The Flyers are heading north a day early for a practice round at Prairie Winds Golf Club, where the Class B championship rounds will be held. The girls are in Watertown, too, and are playing at Cattail Crossing.

This photo offers a good look at Freeman Prairie Arboretum and the adjacent Heritage Hall Museum & Archives campus as it was on a beautiful late-spring Saturday morning. Plans for the arboretum, a 40-acre vista of plants, grasses, ponds, walking paths and other features were announced 25 years ago, which construction beginning shortly thereafter.

This was a post on the Freeman Development - Experience Freeman SD Facebook page on Thursday acknowledging the opening of a new season at the Freeman Swimming Pool. By all accounts it was a busy day at the summer hotspot as hot weather had the place packed. The Freeman pool is open daily from 1 to 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Freeman Academy/Marion 4x200 relay team of Karter Weber, Keaton Preheim, Maddox Kihne and Liam Ortman hangs out on the infield waiting to see their position following the preliminary race at the state track meet on Friday. The boys qualified for the final with the seventh-best time in the field and went on to finish seventh in Saturday's final.

A small group of volunteers, including Luke Allison, Dennis Lehmann and Abraham Cadillo, were working together Wednesday morning to plant 36 roses at the Prairie Rose Amphitheater that is part of the Freeman Prairie Arboretum. It's all part of ongoing maintenance, upkeep and improvements at the 40-acre spot that, this year, is marking 25 years since plans for the arboretum were first announced. Allison is a 2018 Freeman Academy graduate, and both he and Cadillo are recent graduates of Hesston College in Hesston, Kan., who are spending a bit of time in Freeman this summer.

Band members at Menno High School stand as they play the national anthem at the community Memorial Day service at the Menno Cemetery Monday morning, May 29. The 40-minute observance included music, a keynote address from a veteran of the Army National Guard and the reading of the Honor Roll acknowledging the 367 military men and women who have died from the larger Menno community.

Scott Peterson attaches an American flag to a pole at the Freeman Area Veterans Memorial over the weekend. The flags are being displayed in observance of Memorial Day and will remain up for much of the summer.

Freeman High School senior Kate Miller runs to the finish line to greet her teammates immediately following the 4x100 preliminary during the opening day of the three-day state track meet Thursday. Miller and the three other runners — Makenzie Scharberg, Rylee Peters and Zenovia Butler — won their heat with another personal best (15.66) and will compete in the 400-meter final Saturday with the third-best time in the field. The Flyers will also be looking to qualify the 4x200 for Saturday's final, with that prelim set for 10:30 a.m. today.
