Workers are continuing to prepare the side streets for a new roadway in the downtown Freeman area. This is Fourth Street to the west of Main and one of the four blocks adjacent to Main Street that has yet to get a new concrete surface. Meanwhile, work continues north of Railway Street as the new roadway is extending toward the North County Road.

The bell atop the historic Diamond Valley School building is outlined by the rise of Sunday night's Hunter's Moon — the first full moon following the Harvest Moon. The Diamond Valley School building is located on the campus of Heritage Hall Museum & Archives in Freeman.

A successful soccer season at Freeman Academy came to an end in Rapid City Tuesday evening, Oct. 4 when the Bobcats fell to St. Thomas More 7-0 in the opening round of the playoffs. St. Thomas More was the No. 3 seed with a 9-4 record while Freeman Academy entered the postseason as the No. 6 seed and with a 6-3 record.

JEREMY WALTNER  - PUBLISHER The Menno Marching Band will lead the way and will be followed by 14 others as another Menno Band Day unfolds Friday morning, Oct. 7. The host band will march simply as an exhibition and will not be included in the competition. The parade of bands begins at 10 a.m. Those taking part in the battle will be Dakota Valley, Armour, Centerville (high school and middle school), Avon, Canistota (high school and middle school), Colman-Egan, Gayville-Volin, Irene-Wakonda, Parkston, Bridgewater-Emery and Yankton Middle School.

The Freeman High School volleyball team comes together with senior Kate Miller to celebrate her 1,000th kill during Tuesday night's match against Bon Homme. The milestone came two weeks after Miller and teammate Erin Uecker were both recognized for reaching 1,000 career digs.

Due to the removal of the sidewalk in front of City Hall, those needing to use the drop box for payments are encouraged to instead use the CorTrust Bank drop box located at their drive-thru off of Poplar Street. Be sure to label envelopes deposited there.  

STORY & PHOTOS BY JEREMY WALTNER Thirty-five years after it debuted at the Menno City Park and 26 years after moving to a more accommodating acreage purchased by the Menno Power Heritage Association (MPHA) a half-mile north of town, the Pioneer Power Show unfolded once again last weekend. And if the 36th annual event held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 25 suggested anything to the hundreds of exhibitors and guests who took it all in, it’s that Menno’s grandest to-do just keeps getting grander.

It was around 8:15 on Monday night when Oliver announced that Jupiter was as close to the Earth as it has been in almost 60 years and that he was going to step out onto our front porch and have a look. It was a matter of seconds before he hurried back into the house and said he saw something strange — like “a bunch of shooting stars or something.”

Senior Chris Cardona moves with the ball in soccer action Tuesday evening. Freeman Academy hosted Vermillion in the evening matchup with the Bobcats falling 6-0. Still, it appears as though the local soccer team will make the postseason as the No. 6 seed, which means they would travel to St. Thomas More next Tuesday, Oct. 4 for the first round of the playoffs.
